Viva Cuba always has a project in the works! Whether it is planting trees, cleaning up the city, or creating a new mural, we love collaborating! It’s been 41 years since Viva Cuba was formed. The term “Viva Cuba” means “Long Live Cuba” and was introduced by Percy Pascoe, founder of the Cuba Free Press. Here is the progress in Motion around Cuba.
Viva Cuba continues to bring beauty and interest to our town with:
National Mural Day!
Viva Cuba is the founder of National Mural Day, now on the National Days Calendar. The last Saturday in June is designated as National Mural Day nationwide. Celebrate with us by visiting our murals!

Mural QR Codes
Last year, a talented team of local Cubans narrated the stories behind our murals. The audio files are attached to each core mural story. Visitors can now scan a QR code at each mural to listen to the historic tales that weave the fabric of our perseverance and preservation. To see and hear all murals, go to cubamomurals.com.
Tree Progress
Viva Cuba continues to maintain about 90 trees as part of a grant program created by the Tree Resource and Maintenance (TRIM) from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Volunteers spent countless hours during the summer months watering thirsty trees.
Cuba Stays Beautiful
Cuba’s Beautification Day, held the first Saturday in May, and celebrated its 41st year! The annual Trash Bash is a town-wide event where residents, business owners, and local officials come out to clean up the city.
As part of the annual beautification event, Viva Cuba cleans and maintains Viva Cuba Garden at the corner of Hwy 19 and Route 66. This beautiful public space is for everyone to enjoy. Trash Bash Chairperson Linda Prevost is already planning for 2026! To participate, call 573-205-8347.
The Missing Mural
What happened to the River Mural at the corner of Spencer and Hwy 19? It’s a work in progress. The original River Mural suffered severe sun and heat damage over the years.
A new outer wall has been added to the building. It is primed and outlined and ready for paint. Watch its progress in 2025! Shelly Smith Steiger will create another masterpiece for our town.
“We appreciate the support of our community as we continue to grow in so many ways,” said Viva Cuba Chairperson Trish Workman, Peoples Bank. “We couldn’t do what we do without the generosity of countless businesses, residents, city workers, city officials, and volunteers.”
