The Crawford County Historical Society Museum has a new quilt exhibit.   The new display showcases over 20 handmade quilts and each one has a unique story.  To emphasize the collection, these fiber art sensations vary in size, color, and ornamentation. The quilts include traditional patterns like the wedding ring, drunkard’s path, yo-yo, and traditional patchwork to name a few.  The exhibit highlights fiber artists from the Cuba United Methodist Church. The museum’s quilt exhibit includes works from church parishioners  Pat Cookson,  Joyce Stewart, Lisa Curtis, and Ramona Shaw.

The Cuba United Methodist Church Quilt Group is an impressive team of quilters who love what they do and it shows in every stitch.

Signature QuiltWho is the Cuba United Methodist Quilt Group?

Since its inception 150 years ago, the Cuba United Methodist Church has always had a group of quilters in the congregation. In fact, these ladies have spent decades hand quilting on location at the church. The skill and experience in every stitch provide a valuable service to the community.  Furthermore, they repair old quilts, help complete new quilt projects, and provide an invaluable service to the craft of quilting.

What is the Signature Quilt

One quilt in the exhibit, known as the “signature” quilt, was designed in the 1940s by the Cuba United Methodist Church quilt group. The quilt was used to raise money for the church.  Records show each parishioner paid just 10 cents to get their family name embroidered on the quilt.  As a result, the total amount raised was 62.00. The museum displays a list of all 620 names on the quilt.  The quilt was auctioned off and eventually gifted to the museum by resident Naomi Campbell.

The museum’s quilt exhibit will rotate and highlight new quilts and fiber artists every month.  The Crawford County Historical Society Museum is located at 308 N Smith Street and is now open for the summer.
