This year, springtime in Cuba Missouri will be one for the record books. Without a doubt, it feels more like a science fiction novel than reality. In fact, it’s the new normal in America. The villain in this story is the COVID-19 coronavirus. Because of the virus, lives have been changed forever around the world. Whether we like it or not, the truth is, we are in this together.
Cuba’s stay-at-home spring brought about social distancing, school cancellations, and curb side service. While the coronavirus changes the way we interact with each other, it cannot take away the strong sense of community. Our city is a place where people genuinely care about each other. As we continue to reach out in unconventional ways, every day becomes a teachable moment in compassion and patience.
Every year, Viva Cuba’s Mural City banners are added along Highway 19 to kick off the spring and summer seasons. This year, the Cuba Athletic Boosters have added specialty banners that honor the Cuba High School Wildcat senior student athletes who won’t get the chance to play their spring sport this school year.
Support our leaders of tomorrow.
Like many states, Missouri schools will remain closed for the 2019-20 school year. Consequently, high school seniors must forfeit their senior year rite of passage. It is important for the community to recognize the hard work and dedication these students have put forth in their high school legacy. While the future may seem uncertain, these same high school students will be our civic leaders and politicians of tomorrow. As a community, let’s take time to appreciate them on social media, a sign in your yard, or a poster in the window to let them know we care.
A shout out to local high school athletes.
For Cuba High School student athletes, the spring season was over before it ever started. In a heartfelt post, Cuba High School Athletic Director, Ryan Bobbitt summed it up best, “For our seniors, you apply the greatest lesson your sport has ever given you…that is, when news breaks that knocks you down, you do everything in your power to get back up and keep moving. And when you get on your feet, you reach a healing hand to your teammates who need you the most. If being part of a team has taught you anything, it is that you are not alone.” The Cuba Athletic Boosters recognized eleven senior athletes with banners in their honor, now proudly displayed along Highway 19.
As we return to some sense of normalcy, remember to wash your hands, practice social distancing, and congratulate the Cuba High School Class of 2020.
