Stroll through local Civil War History on Buchanan before attending the Civil War Tea and Fashion Show.

Today  April 12, 2011 begins the the sesquicentennial of the beginning of the Civil War when Fort Sumter was fired upon and years of bloody conflict began. During this anniversary year, we will try to keep you up-to-date in local commemorative events as we become aware of them. This is the first such post.

Local Civil War history has been depicted in Viva Cuba‘s Civil War murals on Buchanan Street, just off Route 66 in Cuba, Missouri. Hand painted panels tell the history of the Battle of Pilot Knob from Fort Davidson to Leasburg.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Ciivil War, the Historic Preservation Commission presents a Civil War Tea and Fashion Show on Saturday May 21 at 2:00 pm at the Cuba Presbyterian Church at 701 NW Main Street in the Historic Uptown District of Cuba.

Admission is $5.00, and children six and under are admitted free. Tea, cookies, and snacks will be served as spectators see models in period costumes parade their fashions.

Set the scene for the Fashion Show and Tea by viewing Cuba’s Civil War murals up close. Then attend the tea and fashion show. Afterward, take in the Civil War uniforms and artifacts at the Crawford Country Historic Society Museum on N. Smith Street next to Recklein Auditorium.
