Recently Viva Cuba members visited the fourth graders during Missouri History Week and gave them a narrated tour of the murals as part of the week’s events. Prior to the tour, the 4th graders studied the mural curriculum on each mural that Viva Cuba provides them.
Another source that the students used was Moments in Cuba’s History, which is a photo-rich summary of Cuba’s History prepared for Cuba’s sesquicentennial.
Below is a guest blog by Aly Williams and Grace Horsefield, a couple of fourth grade writers who agreed to give us their report on Missouri History week. Aly and Grace also took the photos that accompany this blog entry.
This week was Missouri week for 4th grade in Cuba, Missouri. Monday, we brought in our Missouri History projects. Some of our favorite exhibits were the famous Seal of Missouri and the Onondaga Cave, along with the Capitol. Another favorite was the McGinnis Wood Products display that is located right here in Cuba, MO.
Tuesday, we shaped and baked the bluebird into cookies with Mrs. Raymo. The bluebird is the state bird. It was fun, and the sugar cookies smelled and tasted great.
Wednesday, some of the classes dressed up as their favorite famous Missourian and did a presentation on themselves. At the end of the day, the 4th grade shared a video called Tom Sawyer in Ms. Dunn’s room.
Thursday, we did a wildlife presentation with Mrs. Zelch, the kindergarten librarian. We got to pass around some animal fur that she had trapped.
Friday, we went on the mural tour with Mrs. Reed and Mrs. Barnett. We saw all the 12 murals in Cuba that were organized by the Viva Cuba committee. If you want to see the murals, go here.
This week was very fun because we got to do a lot of activities, we got to eat, and to listen to different speakers.
Other neat exhibits were the following:
Our guest bloggers, Grace and Aly, did a great job. Mrs. Reed and I enjoyed taking the students on the tour, and we are so impressed by how knowledgable they are about our town!
