Jay Leno would get a kick out of this sign.

Ellen would get a kick out of this sign.

People laugh at it. Some say they are going to send a picture of it in to Jay Leno or Ellen. It was discussed a lot in Viva Cuba meetings. Something had to be done, but we knew a sign saying No Signs Permitted in the Viva Cuba Garden was a little ridiculous.

Here’s the deal. In 2007, when Viva Cuba finished re-landscaping the Viva Cuba Garden at the intersection of Hwy. 19 and Rt. 66, we put in an underground watering system to keep the new plantings healthy during Missouri’s hot summers. It was a little pricey, but before we had to pay someone to water the garden, and it didn’t always get watered when it should have.  We  decided that in the long run the watering system would keep the green space green. The system did just that. The grass stayed green, and the plantings flourished.

The problem was that people would hammer their Yard Sale and Auction signs into the ground. If they broke a pipe, we had to pay to have it fixed. You wouldn’t think signs would be that much of a problem, but they were.  People hammered in 2 X 4s, metal fence posts, stakes, and all manner of sign supports. And no sign poster ever thinks that his or her sign is the one that will cause damage. Sign posters also don’t come back to take signs down, which causes litter and maintenance problems.

Gene Beyers, who keeps Viva Cuba Garden looking spiffy, has had some interesting conversations with people who were hammering signs in while he was working. Gene is a very nice guy and polite. He said that he asked one lady not to put her sign in the garden. She kept hammering. He explained about the underground water lines. She kept hammering. He finally gave up and then removed her sign when she left.

After removing lots of  signs and putting a couple of ads in the paper about not posting signs, we finally decided on the No Sign sign.

We know it looks silly but...

We know it looks silly but…

And to the people that try to attach signs to cardboard boxes, a metal chair (no kidding), and a concrete block, etc., we just think they are ugly. Would you want us to come place such signs in your yard?

So, you can laugh at the sign, take photos of it, but signs are not permitted.  It says so on the sign.
