Cuba, MO “Route 66 Mural City“: This year Viva Cuba has chairs for everyone: mom, dad, kids, little boys, little girls, and anyone who likes a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture. All proceeds go to Viva Cuba beautification projects.
Viva Cuba’s annual auction of artist-designed furniture takes place Saturday, May 8 at Java.net Books & Gifts, 418 N. Franklin. The silent auction begins at 9:00 and ends at 1:00 pm. At 1:00, competitive bidding will continue until there is only one bidder. Selected chairs will be in a live auction at 12:00. See the list below.
This year’s offerings include the following:
Mallards on Parade: Viva Cuba’s own creative Marge Fleming provides this oak chair from Ontario, Canada with a Mallard scene.
Artist Rita Miller’s two children’s chairs display her style and an upbeat message of love and peace for the youthful set.
On the left is the “Bluebird of Happiness” to bring luck. On the right is “Wheel of Love” in soft pastel colors.
“Missouri Duo,” a Windsor chair by Cuba arist Glen Tutterrow pairs two Missouri symbols, the blue bird and the flowering dogwood, in a delicate woodland scene.
Meramec Caverns Barn: This nostalgic barn/stable was donated and painted by Marge Fleming. It has movable barn doors and is made of all new materials. These horses and barn will entertain your little wranglers while they are horsing around.
Noah’s Ark: This child’s high chair painted by Marge Fleming features animals marching two-by-two.
Ole’ Jose’: Marge Fleming’s colorfully created youth chair will come in handy during a visit to grandma’s. The chair was donated by Judy Workman.
Whopper: The mounted fish on this chair was donated by the Fanning US 66 Outpost’s Danny Sanazaro. It is a worthy fisherman’s resting spot.
Bahama Breeze: The material that accessorizes this glass topped Rattan table and four chairs is a Tommy Bahama design. Joyce Stewart upholstered the chairs and made the decorative table runners. A Missouri sunroom or Florida lanai will make a great home for this set.
Cat’s Eyes: Marge Fleming provided this gently used desk chair used by Tom and Bill Fleming in their boyhood home south of Cuba. It is a Shaker replica made of Vermont Maple from Bennington Mfg. Co. The cat’s eyes painted on the chair and the cats’ eyes cushion give it an exotic look.
Fred Bird: You can’t go wrong with the Cardinals and Fredbird, a popular Missouri duo. Peggy Holland donated this child’s rocker, which artist Marge Fleming transformed into a colorful Cardinal rocker.
I’ve Been Working on the Railroad: If your little person likes trains, this is the chair for you. Marge Fleming painted this chair, which is a accompanied by a bear wearing his Engineer overalls, a kerchief, and a music box that plays “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” when you press the bear’s arm. A wooden train whistle is a bonus.
Aunt Walburga’s Heirloom: This ageless walnut Victorian chair with needlepoint by Marge Fleming reminds us of yesterday’s elegance.
Fairy Garden: Judy Koski has painted a little girl’s fantasy with her dancing fairies among the flowers. With its pink trim, this chair definitely says “girl.”
Sunflower Comfort: Kaye Schmidt’s Sunflower Comfort Rocking Chair would make a great companion to any porch. The back of the rocker says it all: The porch, long a symbol of comfort, a lazy link between outside and in.
Mural City Gothic: Artist Ray Harvey’s chair is a whimsical version of American artist Grant Wood’s American Gothic painting.
Winter Retreat: Susie Haffer’s “Winter Retreat” is a crisp navy and white snow scene with a snug cabin set in a forest of trees.
This mini-me doll chair is a Windsor style that would be perfect for an American Girl doll. It is 15″ tall and has a sleeping kitten curled up on its seat. The chair was donated by Sharon and Richard Hewkin of Two Olde Crows Antique Mall of Cuba.
Bleeding Heart Flowers: Danielle Fleming Payne‘s colorful stool features Bleeding Heart Flowers for a striking piece of decor.
