Saturday is the first day of spring. The Channel 5 weatherman said spring arrives officially at 12:32 Sunday. But it’s coming even if snow flurries are predicted. Winter knows that it is going to be a spectacular spring. Winter is jealous and hanging on as long as posslbe. But spring and its season of rebirth will arrive.
Many activities are associated with spring: graduations, ball practice, kids playing outside again, yard sales, Easter clothes, digging in the dirt and planting flowers, getting out the hoses, and spring cleaning. Nature gets busy with trees leafing out and flowers blooming.
The new Cuba School track dedication is in May. A lot of community members worked on that project, and the track and its buildings are looking good. Track kids are already practicing there.
I looked out on the deck yesterday, and the dog was sitting in one chair, and the cat was sitting on a cushion in another chair. They enjoyed the sun and thought spring was already here.
The Viva Cuba organization ramps up its activities in the spring. On April 1st we will unveil a new fundraiser to fund public art.
The Saturday, May 1st Trash Bash for 2010 is in the planning stages. You will hear more about that soon, and we hope you can help us out. There’s a lot of trash out there. We don’t like it and would like to expand the idea of a cleaner Cuba throughout the year. We would like your help and input on how to accomplish this. We will be posting more information on Cuba’s Adopt-a-Street Program .
We are finalizing plans for the Saturday, May 8 Chair-i-table auction at Java.net. We are rounding up all the chairs and getting photos so that we can let everyone know what is available this year. At some point, we will post photos of all the chairs.
At the Viva Cuba meeting yesterday, we discussed planting the planters around town as we do every year. We’re anxious to do that, but we decided we better wait until May. We discussed if the big flower pots by the Viva Cuba Garden looked weathered or if they need painted. That’s under consideration.
We are getting metal brochure boxes painted to put out along the mural route so that visitors can get mural, Chamber, and Historic Preservation brochures. Artist Julie Balogh Brand will paint them.
Viva Cuba formed a team for Race to the Rocker. We know that we won’t win anything, but we want to be supportive of other organizations. That’s why some of us helped JOG,inc. pick up trash along Rt. 66. That was a job.
In May, a couple of us are going over to visit the fourth graders at Cuba Schools. We get on a school bus and give them a narrated tour of the murals. They have been studying Viva Cuba’s mural curriculum and already know a lot about Cuba’s history. Last year we loved seeing the dioramas that they built featuring Cuba attractions. This year a couple of students will be blogging about the tour and their studies, and we will post the blog on our site. I call them Kidbloggers.
We have maintenance to finish on the murals this year, and the city is suppose to help us get lights on the Millworks and Amelia murals. We also need to get some lights working on murals that already have them. It seems we get lights changed on one mural, and there are lights out on another. Our goal is to get all the murals lit-at the same time- so that they are showcased at night.
We all make plans in the spring. Viva Cuba has their “To Do” list too. But sometime when the spring saps rise, you just have to shake a tail feather. See this video.
