It’s funny how things happen. I was on my way to a Viva Cuba meeting when I noticed the colorful cars traveling the streets of uptown Cuba. The passengers were looking at the murals, and I circled the block because I knew they would stop, and I wanted a photo of the cars in front of a mural.
Sure enough the folks were on the lawn of Wallace House by the time that I stopped, got out a couple of extra brochures, and got my camera out of my purse. I asked if they had a brochure and when they didn’t, I gave the two couples, who were traveling Route 66 together, each a brochure. The Fairchilds had a black 1931 Ford Model A. Their friends were driving a 1952 shiny, red Oldsmobile. They were from Indiana and seemed to be having a blast traveling, stopping, taking photos, and as one said “eating our way along Route 66.” While in Cuba, they had stopped at MO Hick BBQ where they bought BBQ sauce. They were photographing murals and were headed out to see the “big rocker” at the Fanning Outpost.
They were the nicest people that you could meet. While I was in St. Louis Thursday night checking my phone email before a play at the Fox Theater, I read an email from the Fairchilds. It said in part:
On Thursday, August 20 we ‘rumbled’ through your wonderful town on our Rt. 66 tour….We enjoyed our time in Cuba. We shopped, ate, and had a great time….
Three things struck me about this event:
- It is so cool to be able to meet folks from Indiana and share the experience and continue the relationship via emails and a blog
- The murals and Cuba’s businesses attract visitors from all over the world and the U.S. It is great to be able to share our town with them.
- And how much more interesting does it make our town to see the classic cars, the motorcycles, etc. that bring our visitors to Cuba, MO
I was late for the meeting, but it was worth it. Later, I received an email from the Fairchilds with some photos from their visit to the rocking chair at the Fanning Outpost, which I will share here.

WOW! The “Carol,John,Butch and Gail BIG ADVENTURE on Route 66” has left us with the desire to come back again. Of all the places we visited on our week-long trip, Cuba was our number #1 pick of towns. Thank you for making our visit so special. Viva Cuba!!!
