It was exciting when passing thru your town, we saw the name CUBA, the country which we are originally from. We had to stop, took pictures and drove around to see more. Then, to our surprise we saw beautiful works of art, the murals. We hope we can see them again when we go back to Missouri.
I am intrigued of how the town acquired its name, When I get this information I will call all my Cuban
friends to share it,
Thank you
Before Cuba was founded, there was a small post office to the west of where Cuba is now. It was named Amanda for the postmaster George M. Jamison’s wife. Then, anticipating the railroad, two men Trask and Ferguson surveyed a town along where the future railroad would be. The responsibility for naming the town is said to have belonged to George Jamison and Wesley Smith. Smith suggested the name Cuba as a show of support for Cuban citizens, who were then under Spain’s rule. Jamison wanted to name the town for his wife Amanda. Legend says that they stood a stick on end, and they let it fall. How the stick fell determined the name of the town. Even though the new town was named Cuba, Amanda was not forgotten. During the 2007 celebration of Cuba’s sesquicentennial, the town celebrated “Amanda Days” with music, contests, food, and other activities.
I don’t know a whole lot about art, but this is all very cool. I’m headed out to Missouri in December. You are officially going to be my tour guide. Also, my glasses are so thick and my eyes are so bad that murals are the only pictures I can really appreciate.
Take care friends.
Josh,
If you haven’t already, you can contact us through this website–www.cubamomurals.com- to set up a tour. There is info on the contact page.
Every mural has a story, and we will be happy to share them with you.
My dream is to visit Cuba, MO before I’m pushing up daisies. At 70 I really need this.
We always look forward to visitors and especially followers of our site. We have additions to our Cuba MO’s public art all the time, so it is only getting better!
