Thanks for the extra information that you have added. We hope that you can visit us in Cuba sometime and visit Hayes Shoe Store to see Robert Wadlow’s shoes. I am sure the folks at Hayes would like to hear your stories.

Robert Waldow was a Student at Shurtleff College and my brother attended and graduated from Shurtleff. He picked my brother up
like a toy. I also went to Shurtleff and I lived at the Dorm where they built a Bronz statue of him. When I was young I went to the Illinois State Fair and they sold metal rings of his for souverners. They fit me as a braclet. Shurtleff College became Southern Illinois College of Denistry at Alton Illinois. My cousin worked at Internation shoe company in St. Louis, Mo. as an advertising Agent and modled shoes. She was their when they made his shoes.

Jim, from what I have heard, it wasn’t a very pleasant crossing in the tunnel. I don’t think that you were the only one who preferred fresh air. And some of the little kids were probably scared to death of the tunnel.

I graduated in 1963, but from the 7th grade through my freshman year I was at the old school. I detested using the underpass and would take my chances crossing Rt. 66 to get to the dime store or the Meramec Drug store.

The market will be moving to right on Route 66 this season with new management. You might check with Spirals Art Gallery & Studio in Cuba about the market. They will be right next to the market and can probably give you information. Spirals is on Facebook for contact information.
