The new Missouri Route 66 signs are cropping up around the state. The blue and white signs are part of the profile of Route 66 as a Missouri Scenic Byway. Route 66 was designated as a Missouri Scenic Byway November 9, 2005. There was a formal dedication of the Byway May 5, 2006.
Route 66 of Missouri President Tommy Pike and his wife Glenda have been touring the state, meeting with MoDOT officials, and inventorying existing signs for months. The results are starting to show as the new signs take their place along Route 66.
The Route 66 Association of Missouri and the Missouri Department of Transportation have worked together to place the signs, which are just beginning to be installed along the different alignments of Missouri Route 66. There may be initial gaps in the signage as various groups have responsibility for posting signs.
The signs are to guide travelers from all over the world and the U.S. as they enjoy the attractions, restaurants, and scenery of the Mother Road in Missouri.
The Gold Star Boys mural provides a backdrop for the new signs.
In Cuba, Missouri the signs are an attractive addition to the historic district that is intersected by Route 66. Against a backdrop of murals and flowers, the signs are a stand out. Although placing the signs in Missouri is an ongoing project, Cuba, Missouri can enjoy their beauty now.
The signs let travelers know that they are still on the Route 66, even though the street names may change.
